How Preferred Professional Auto Insurance Got Started

PPIC began in 1987 as a predominantly Catholic company designed to offer physicians medical malpractice insurance. It was known as the Preferred Physicians Insurance Company, but its name changed in the 90s to represent its wider reach throughout the medical industry.

The company also gave physicians assistance in scheduling continuing education courses and offered risk management consultations.

As PPIC grew throughout the 90s, the company merged with the Consolidated Catholic Casualty Risk Retention Group and began serving a wider range of medical professionals. The company’s name changed, and it expanded across the United States.

In 2000, the PPIC developed a shareholder partnership with the Catholic Relief Society of America. This began a trend, and within the next few years, seven more Catholic healthcare providers developed relationships with PPIC in exchange for purchasing stock and becoming major shareholders.

Over the next decade, many more Catholic groups became joint shareholders and part-owners of PPIC.
